Mickey Matthews had a significant impact on JMU football, leading the team to its first Division I-AA (now FCS) National Championship in 2004. His tenure included multiple playoff appearances and a historic win over Virginia Tech in 2010. Matthews was released in 2013 after a 6–6 season and missing the FCS playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
